New Hampshire Gay Men's Chorus

Richard Mundy - member since January 2001

We stay in the big bad bass section, and have a chat with our dear friend, Richard Mundy. Richard is 57 and a widower, surviving his partner of ten years, who passed in 1991. Richard is another multi-talented individual, who works as an art teacher, a colorist, a gift shop owner, and a retailer. He lives in Alexandria and has been in the chorus for four years.

Richard's favorite activities include drawing and painting, shopping for antiques and attending the theatre. His favorite movie is Arthur and his favorite musical is Mame. Richard's favorite books are The Private World of Katherine Hepburn and Kate Remembered. Richard is a huge fan of this unforgettable woman!

When asked who his favorite singer is, Richard responded that he's always had a fondness for Rod Stewart's raspy voice. But, his favorite singer is Barbara Cook. He went on to quote Rex Reed who said "She's the best thing that's happened to music since the invention of the harp, and that's all anyone has the right to ask for now! But if I ever get to heaven, and the angels don't all sound just like Barbara Cook, God's gonna have a lot to answer for!"

Richard's most memorable moment in the chorus came when he finally decided to audition! He doesn't have a least favorite chorus song, but the radio song he never wants to hear again is Debbie Boone's You Light Up My Life. This song (a #1 hit) was played continuously in the late 70's throughout sound systems in the Colony Music Shop (the best place in the world to find rare music) and echoing throughout Times Square. Richard would hear this song nightly as he would walk from theater to theater to sell goods to theater-goers and tourists (one of his part-time jobs).

Richard would like the chorus to try a couple of songs. The first is To Saint Cecilia by Norman Dello Joio. He sang this with the All New England State College European Tour back in his college days, and still has a copy! Richard would also like the chorus to sing All The Things You Are by Jerome Kern. When Richard meets his maker in the afterlife, he will sing God, Help the Outcasts.

The question that he would like to see on our next questionnaire is "what have been some of your most stress-releasing moments?" And his response: Besides the aforementioned activities, chorus rehearsals have helped Richard out, as well as writing three personal pages every morning before getting out of bed, including all thoughts & feelings - anything that's released from your brain out through your fingers onto paper!

Finally, Richard's goal for the chorus is to someday combine forces with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus or New York City Gay Men's Chorus (or both) for a show at Symphony Hall or Carnegie Hall! Thanks for all your input, Richard!
